Adding shadows to an image is a very popular effect - and very easy.
Step 1
The first step is opening/making your image. I'm going to do a basic image of text.
Step 2
This next step deals with making the part you'd like shadowed on a different layer. If you already have your layer separate, skip to Step 4.
I'll select the magic wand tool (the lasso tool can also be used) to separate my text from the picture.
Step 3
Right-click what you have selected, and hit 'layer via cut.' This should create your new layer.
Step 4
Right click the layer on the layers window, and hit 'blending options' (this is farther up than the picture displays).
Step5
Select 'drop shadow.' Play around with the effects to get the shadow you desire.
